Impact of Healthy Lesotho's Support:
The installation of new maternity and neonatal equipment, dental diagnostic tools, and patient monitoring devices has led to immediate and measurable improvements in care at Maluti Adventist Hospital. Staff report stronger capacity to monitor and respond tomothers during labour, support vulnerable newborns, and detect early signs of patient deterioration.
The replacement of older and dangerously high delivery beds with four new adjustable beds has greatly improved safety and dignity for mothers. Previously, women in active labour often struggled to climb onto the beds without assistance, creating delays and increasing the risk of injury to both patients and staff. The new beds have improved comfort, reduced physical strain, and enabled healthcare providers to manage deliveries more efficiently.
The installation of a new infant warmer and incubator has strengthened the hospital’s capacity to care for preterm and low birthweight babies. Previously, the maternity ward had only one functional infant warmer and an aging incubator, which limited the ability to manage multiple vulnerable newborns at the same time.
The introduction of ultrasound transducers has enhanced maternal and fetal care by enabling more accurate and timely assessments during pregnancy. This has supported early identification of complications and improved birth preparedness. The bilirubinometer and phototherapy units have further strengthened neonatal care by enabling prompt diagnosis and treatment of newborn jaundice. This has reduced reliance on visual assessment alone and allowed for faster, evidence-based intervention.
Support for dental services has also made a significant difference. With the introduction of a portable dental X ray machine and dedicated laptop, the dentist can now accurately pinpoint dental issues at the point of care. Previously, patients had to be taken to the general radiology department, where images often did not clearly show specific teeth or retained fragments requiring extraction. The new system has improved diagnostic accuracy, reduced delays and enabled more effective treatment.
In addition, patient safety has been enhanced through new vital signs machines that support early detection of clinical deterioration. Together, these investments demonstrate the importance of Healthy Lesotho’s support in improving safety, efficiency and quality of care for patients most at risk.
